The Clean Cut: 13-year-old reporter asks South Carolina's Frank Martin an incredible question

Posted March 28

Frank Martin, head coach of South Carolina, was sitting in a press conference when he was floored by a question from Max Bonnstetter, 13-year-old reporter for Sports Illustrated Kids.

“When you coach and teach your team defense, what’s more important—technique or attitude?” questioned the young reporter.

Before he addressed the question, Coach Martin addressed the person asking the question.

“First of all, a lot of respect to you. That’s a heck of a question," Martin said complimenting Bonnstetter. "I’ve been doing this a long time and that’s the first time anyone’s ever asked me that. That’s a heck of a question.”

Comments on the video on Facebook reflected Coach Martin’s respect for the young reporter’s question, one saying “Seriously great question. Kid has a future in sports journalism,” and another saying, “Kid just took someone’s job.”

The video has been viewed over 3.5 million times, and has tens of thousands of likes and shares.

The answer to the killer question? “Attitude comes first,” said Coach Martin. “We gotta have guys who believe in our mission...it all starts with our mindset.”
