Tell Raleigh what you want to see in its parks

Do you want more spraygrounds? More playgrounds? More trails? More ballfields? More natural areas? Have you seen a unique playground in another city that you'd love Raleigh to build?

It's time to speak up. Raleigh officials are mapping out park plans for the city over the next 20 years and they are looking to park users for some thoughts. And with the amount of time parents spend in Raleigh's parks, I'm sure there are lots of ideas out there!

The city has been holding meetings over the last couple of weeks to provide information and get some feedback. The final one is 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at Lake Lynn Community Center, 7921 Ray Rd., in north Raleigh. Click here for details.

But, if you can't make the meeting, the city also has this website where the public can take a look at the plan so far and make comments and suggestions.

I, for one, would love to see more spraygrounds, which essentially are play pieces that spray water, around the city's parks.

Less of my coerced tax money; more money earned or asked for.

Raleigh is the City of Oaks. That wonderful genus with its adorable seeds should be represented in each park - someone else mentioned labeling plants and telling a bit about them. One magnificent specimen in each park would be quite commanding.

LESS kids!!!!!!!! LOL

Beth

I'll have what LEX is selling, and TRAILS. Hiking, biking, whatever - just get me outside away from this PC!

hookers and blow! monkeyboy January 17, 2013 5:28 p.m. Report abuse

Monkey Boy you aint right in the head, but your funny as all get out.

Tell Raleigh what you want to see in its parks NONE OF MY TAXES

More mental institutions; that's what our parks need.

Stop pandering to the homeless and get rid of them!

free beer

More spray grounds. They are the greatest for people on a budget.

A building for skating, a walking area, jogging, park benches, a section for a families to grill and have a picnic, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields. A nice Central Park type park, just a little different than New York.

OK, for the new Dorothea Dix property park espeically, I would like to see a historic trail where people, especially young people, can learn about Raleigh's role in the Civil War, seeing that Sherman's troops camped on the site. Make it fun, entertaining, and educational.

I think it would be nice if they put a few water fountains (for drinking) along the greenways...they'd come in handy in the summer

I'd like to see more adult fitness on the Greenways, like pull up bars and stuff. For the conservatives that want lower taxes. Move to one of the red counties that don't have quite as much businesss, but plenty of angry attitude.

Zip Lines! (Seriously - i'm the first person to suggest this???) A Land-Luge course! A lazy river! A surfing river like they have at the Englisher Gardens in Munich!

Oh...and nature Trail....with plants labeled...etc...

Trees-Flowers-Birds-running trails...picnic tables...water fountains....basket ball court..as you enter..Benches...playgrounds....trash cans....doggie trash containers. ..signs that say you will be fined for littering and for leaving your dog's business in the park...

Vending machines that sell beer and cheap wine. How about dont do anything and save the money and cut taxes! Thats a new idea for the city council.

I personally would like to see RPD start to ticket those who park at Pullen Park all along Western Blvd and on the greenway. It's not safe and have seen too many close calls and been involved in one VERY close call of an accident because some soccer mom was too lazy to park where she was supposed to park. There is NO shortage of parking, you just have to walk a few more feet- and since you are going to a park anyhow, those few extra steps should be welcome addition to the fresh air they are there to get to begin with.

barfly "Up on Dix Hill, I think the homeless population would want some nice covered shelters, a few grills, and a restroom. Same for those wandering the streets with their mental illness going untreated. After all, it's their park too."

Since the homeless are not paying taxes, why would we spend money on them to come invade our park? Hopefully they stay out.

Yes 24 hour police patrols on horse back in all parks and on trails

Please libs, dont be wasting water resources on sprayers- driving up our cost of what necessary for life. Plus they will have sell and repurpose the funds driving up fees and taxes

A lot of mounted police, these days.

Shade

Concealed Carry for those with a permit in all the parks and greenways.

I would love to see more parking.

Interactive art sculptures. Amphitheaters. Plenty of green space for picnics and shows. I don't think more spraygrounds are wise until we resolve the yearly water shortages, unless they are indoors.

While the Downtown Amphitheatre is nice, it would be really cool if one of our parks had a nice medium-sized outdoor theater similar to Koka Booth. We really enjoy the natural setting, great acoustics, and family-friendly atmosphere out there...

looks like we're all in agreement that there is becoming way too much of the lower element...I suggest mandatory birthcontrol.

Or open carry one!!!

Less lowlife on the greenway.

art, new types of playground equipment and TENNIS COURTS in every park!!

Gang bangers can't be at the mall without parental guidance....

"Fewer vagrants, gang members, and pedophiles..."

Lots of vagrants around Moore Square but the gang bangers are at the mall and the pedophiles are at church.

Fewer vagrants, gang members, and pedophiles...

I would go on the green ways if I didn't feel like I would be mugged!

cotton candy machines!

No crime

No clowns

MAJOR roller coasters (Plural), MAJOR water slides (Plural)~!

Why can't we have a major amusement/water park HERE instead of 2+ hours away?

Money trees!!

Moore Square is NOT safe for children.

My opinion is about Moore Square specifically. I'd like to see less chicken bones my dog may choke on laying on the walks, less beer cans and wine bottles, empty trash cans, less of a stench of urine from where people go behind the bushes, and less fights between drunk/homeless. Is that too much to ask? blarneystonenc

I think all of those ideas sound great, especially the spray grounds... One recommendation I have is to fence-in the playgrounds, spraygrounds etc. For children, especially under 3 years of age, it can be impossible to keep them from running off. I love the toddler park in Brier Creek but I feel like 1.) it's too close to the parking lot 2.) it's not fenced in. I think more benches would be great too! An ideal, safe park would be to have the play equipment and benches/picnic tables enclosed with a fence. Personally, when I go to the park I end up more stressed than relaxed. My toddler is wanting to run off while I try to juggle my 7 month old and making sure our lunches/diaper bag/etc are secure. I've also seen other mothers struggle with the same predicaments when visiting parks.
