Teenager hit by car in Harnett County

Posted August 22, 2010

— A 16-year-old was hit by a car on Saturday in Harnett County.

According to the state Highway Patrol, Derek Joseph Brown was crossing N.C. Highway 87 in Cameron when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 45-year-old woman.

Paramedics transported Brown to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment of two broken legs and massive head trauma. He was listed in fair condition Sunday afternoon.

The driver was transported to Central Carolina Hospital as a precaution.  She was suffering from minor neck pain.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the wreck and no charges will be filed against the driver, troopers said.

It's best not to make assumptions on the cause of the accident. Thankfully the members of the NC Highway Patrol are very good at their jobs and do their best to determine the cause of an accident and assign fault to those deserving of it. In the end it could be a plethora of circumstances that worked together to create just the right conditions for such a horrible accident. After caring for many victims of NC 87 accidents over the years, I think everyone should just thank their lucky stars the accident wasn't worse.

Brown is a kid. and yes it does say that so he shouldnt have been walkin across there. but most likely that lasy was texting because she didnt even slamm on her breaks. she still drove a good bit after she hit him. i was the first one to see it and to see him. She could atleast tried to stop. and on top of that , she sped up to make a yellow light. They do need to check her phone to see if she was texting. Thank you.

I do believe there are signs at that intersection that state that pedestrians are not supposed to cross NC87/24 there. The accident is Brown's fault.
