Teens have busy schedules these days, but I've heard from plenty of parents looking for fun, educational and safe activities for them. If you have a science-loving teen, add these Teen Science Cafes to your list.

Both the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh and Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill host these monthly programs, which run during the school year. The programs, which are free, offer informal opportunities to learn about science and technology. There's typically a scientist presentation and activity related to the discussion. Teens also can meet others interested in science.

At the natural sciences museum, the first one of the season will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday. The museum's website has more information. They run on the first Friday of each month. UPDATE: Friday's Teen Science Cafe was canceled because of the stormy weather.

At Morehead, it's 5:30 p.m., Sept. 9. Morehead's website has details. They are held on the second Friday of each month.
