FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 16-year-old is charged with firing a handgun during a fight with a 22-year-old man at Westover High School in Fayetteville Thursday afternoon, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Antonio Dauvon Mathis, of 849 Bedrock Dive, met Johnny Gary at the high school at 277 Bonanza Drive around 4 p.m., spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said. The two got into a fight, and Mathis pulled out a handgun, fired at Gary and ran away, she said.

Fayetteville police officers on patrol spotted Mathis and followed him to his home. Investigators found two handguns and a sawed-off shotgun in an outdoor shed.

Mathis became combative while he was arrested, Tanna said. He was charged with discharging a firearm on school property.

Mathis was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center Friday under a $1,500 secured bond. That bond will be downgraded to unsecured if a parent signs for his release, Tanna said.

His first court appearance was set for Friday afternoon.
