— A 16-year-old is charged with firing a handgun during a fight with a 22-year-old man at Westover High School in Fayetteville Thursday afternoon, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Antonio Dauvon Mathis, of 849 Bedrock Dive, met Johnny Gary at the high school at 277 Bonanza Drive around 4 p.m., spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said. The two got into a fight, and Mathis pulled out a handgun, fired at Gary and ran away, she said.

Fayetteville police officers on patrol spotted Mathis and followed him to his home. Investigators found two handguns and a sawed-off shotgun in an outdoor shed.

Mathis became combative while he was arrested, Tanna said. He was charged with discharging a firearm on school property.

Mathis was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center Friday under a $1,500 secured bond. That bond will be downgraded to unsecured if a parent signs for his release, Tanna said.

His first court appearance was set for Friday afternoon.

What a waste of a life. This kid isway too young to be in this kind of trouble, as it is unlikely he will ever be a productive positive contributor to society.

The article didn't say they were STUDENTS at Westover.

16 years old. Imagine what this kid will be like when he grows up. Unless the punishment fits the crime. Which is only wishful thinking I'm afraid.

" Just $1500 dollars. I had to look twice. Surely they meant $150,000. "

Nope, kaydee123, not here in cumberland county... unfortunately!

Just $1500 dollars. I had to look twice. Surely they meant $150,000. This young man could have fatally wounded the 22 year old or some other poor innocent bystander. He should not be allowed to walk the streets.

Judging by this young man's picture, he looks very angry. I believe he needs a mental evaluation and taken from his home for a while. I am just glad no one was hurt during his actions.

@raysson- where did you get your facts that the 22 year old was in the 12th grade?? doesn't the article only state that the 16 yr old met this 22 yr old at westover?

  • raysson Aug 28, 2009

How could be this student be arrested and suspended from school on the first full day of the school year??? Its like a Chris Rock comedy sketch I heard once, and Chris was right when he said it...
"How could you let your child be left back in the 1st grade?" "What kind of parent would let their child be left back to be the laughing stock of the other children in the school?"

  • raysson Aug 28, 2009

He's what??? 22 years old??? In the 12th grade?
And you mean to tell me that they keep kids this old in the schools??? No wonder the public school system is messed up.
