RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh cabdriver turned his taxi into a temporary prison for a suspected thief who threatened him Friday afternoon.

Cabdriver Simon Nyaga said that he became suspicious of his passenger, Barrington Simon, 43, of 2924 Trassacks Drive. Simon said he wanted to run a few errands and go to the airport, Nyaga said.

Nyaga said he knew Simon was up to no good when a grocery store clerk checked Simon's receipt.

As they left the grocery store, Simon told Nyaga that he had a gun, but Nyaga dialed 911 on his cell phone, without Simon knowing.

Nyaga then locked the taxi doors and drove down East Martin Street, with his horn blowing and lights blinking, hoping to grab the police's attention.

Simon jumped out of the taxi when Nyaga slowed at Martin and Wilmington streets. Officers on horseback grabbed Simon when he stopped to pick up his groceries.

Raleigh police charged Simon with misdemeanor larceny.
