Tax deal cuts school, Energy Star sales tax holidays

Legislators and Gov. Pat McCrory struck a deal Monday on a major tax reform package, making some of the most significant changes to the tax code since the 1930s, according to WRAL.

A lot of changes are ahead for N.C. taxpayers. Read the full story and the details in this WRAL story.

Among those changes are cuts to two popular offerings that I know plenty of Go Ask Mom readers look forward to each year.

The new deal will eliminate the back to school sales tax holiday starting in 2014. It also will end the sales tax holiday for Energy Star appliances starting in 2014.

These sales holidays are still a go for this year.

This year, the school sales tax holiday is set for Aug. 2 to Aug. 4. Shoppers can buy certain items such as clothing, school supplies and computers and pay no tax during the weekend.

The Energy Star holiday is Nov. 1 to Nov. 3 this year. Shoppers buying certain Energy Star qualified products that meet efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy are exempt from taxes. That includes clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.

Next year, they'll be no more.
