Task force to review proposal restricting vehicle signs in Raleigh

Posted July 1, 2014

A proposed amendment to a Raleigh City Ordinance would prohibit certain small businesses from parking vehicles that advertise their services on the side of roads.

— The Raleigh City Council on Tuesday asked a task force to review a proposal that would prohibit some companies from parking next to roadways vehicles that advertise their business.

Establishments with fleets or those who use the vehicles daily would be exempt from the measure. Otherwise, owners would have to park the vehicles behind the business or as close as possible to its entrance.

The proposed amendment to the city's sign ordinance is in response to complaints about businesses using their vehicles to circumvent the sign ordinance.

The city's Sign Task Force will review the measure and report back to city leaders.

A public hearing – yet to be scheduled – would then be held on the matter before the City Council takes any action.

The Raleigh "Sign Police" are absolute control freaks. They might as well be wearing brown shirts.

Who in the world is complaining about something this trivial?

Oh wait, never mind. Please accept my apology. I can think of quite a few regular GOLO posters that would complain about this.

This is a classic example of government overreach. What problem are they solving, a few people don't like signs? How constitutional is it to tell people where they can park on their own property? How much would it cost to enforce, and how many people would be angered? Many signs are more attractive than much of what passes as "art".

Raleigh tried something similar to this and was with garbage disposal a few years ago and we were the laughing stock of the country because it made national news.
