RALEIGH, N.C. — WRAL's Scott Mason has seen a lot of places and covered a lot of stories as our "Tar Heel Traveler."

"I noticed the ones that seemed to really strike a chord and touch a nerve were the ones about restaurants," Mason said.

Whether it was Britt's Donuts in Carolina Beach or Clyde Cooper's Barbecue in Raleigh, emails would flood in from viewers feeling connected to the restaurants themselves, not just the food.

Feeling like there was "more to the story," Mason embarked on his second book, Tar Heel Traveler Eats. Out Tuesday, the book features the behind-the-scenes stories of 30 of his most popular Tar Heel Traveler restaurant features.

It was hard to narrow down which stories would make the book. Mason said he focused on the ones with the best stories to tell.

Each chapter focuses on a different restaurant and features Mason's behind-the-scenes story. "We're pulling back the veil of journalism," he said.

Mason has been a feature reporter at WRAL-TV for 30 years. His popular Tar Heel Traveler segments air Monday through Thursday at 5:55 p.m. on WRAL News.

Be sure to watch Mason on WRAL News at noon on Wednesday and later that night catch the Tar Heel Traveler Eats special at 7 p.m. on WRAL.
