Take from the till misplaced at Fayetteville Krispy Kreme

Posted August 9, 2010

— A report of theft at the Krispy Kreme on Fayetteville's Bragg Boulevard Friday turned out to be a simple case of a misplaced bank bag, a police spokesman said.

Sticky situation: Donut deposit misplaced Sticky situation: Donut deposit misplaced

The store is out about $5,000 after a drive-through clerk handed over the day's receipts to a customer, said Dan Grubb of the Fayetteville Police Department.

The store manager usually takes the daily deposit to the bank concealed in a doughnut box, Grubb said. It is her habit to put the money in the box, put the box by the window, then drive around to pick it up. A clerk unfamiliar with the manager's plan handed the box to a customer, Grubb said.

As of Monday at noon, no one had returned the money to the store, Grubb said.

Why put the deposit in a donut box anyway? Sounds fishy...I've worked in gas stations and retail stores...deposits are counted in a locked office by the manager...paperwork done in the office...deposit placed in deposit bag and IMMEDIATELY either placed in the SAFE (which the manager has access too) or taken to the bank. Security and theft prevention my foot...if she didn't feel safe walking to her car with the deposit bag why not have an employee walk with her to the car? Is she also worried about theft once exiting her car and walking into the bank?? I think it is more common place to hear about banks being robbed rather than Krispy Kremes...hmmm makes me wonder if she carries the donut box into the bank too...either way....something smells with this story...and its not a fresh hot donut!

I don`t know about all you People.I have no other ? or answer but to tell that it was a inside Job. What about the Manager? he could have the Clerk put the box by the window and then knew who to give it to. Just a guess. To me that was so stupid to start with. A Donut Box? come on.

@ mochabrown: I think you misunderstand...The money wasn't just kept there until it was time to go make a deposit. In order to avoid the store manager having to walk to the car with a wad of cash, they had the procedure in place to have it passed out the drive thru window for protection of the deposit and the manager. It makes perfect sense, but just got messed up on this occasion!!

my question is how can they charge the person who got the money if it was given to them.

I would keep it, money gets stolen out of my paycheck every month from the government, legally. If I come across a chance to get a chunk, I'll take it.

Apparently employee training hadn't reached the level of telling the employee who got the days receipts. Small wonder this chain is tanking.
