Take a hike during Triangle Volksmarch Saturday

Triangle Volksmarch, a self-paced walking challenge for all ages, is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, along the Reedy Creek section of the Capital Area Greenway between the N.C. Museum of Art and Umstead State Park. Other activities also will take place at both the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences' Prairie Ridge Ecostation, which is in west Raleigh, and N.C. State University's Schenck Memorial Forest.

Here's how it works: Participants can pick up a free map and passport at any of the event facilities (or online). They can then visit stamp stations along the Capital Area Greenway anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and earn the Volksmarch patch.

10 a.m. to noon: Decorate a walking stick at the N.C. Museum of Art.  Free sticks available for the first 250 participants.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Citizen Science at Prairie Ridge Ecostation. Help biologists do real science field research.

Noon to 2 p.m.: Forestry and Fire at Schenck Forest. See live demonstrations and meet Smokey Bear.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Wildlife Mini-Safari with park rangers at Umstead State Park, Reedy Creek Entrance.

4 p.m. to 7 p.m.: Triangle Volksmarch after party. Celebrate a day of hiking/walking with local food, fun, family and friends at Great Outdoor Provision Co. in Cameron Village.
