Troopers searching for red SUV in fatal Cumberland County hit-and-run

— The State Highway Patrol said Wednesday that investigators are searching for an SUV in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Cumberland County last week.

Authorities determined that a Chevrolet Equinox, possibly between a 2005 and 2009 year model, was eastbound on Cumberland Road shortly after 9 p.m. Friday when it struck Tonia Moore, 48, of Fayetteville, who was crossing the road near the Belhaven Road intersection.

Moore was thrown across the travel lanes, and a second car hit her. She died at the scene.

The Equinox driver fled, leaving behind pieces of the vehicle, including part of the front left headlight assembly and a side-view mirror, authorities said. The driver of the second car remained at the accident scene.

Anyone with information about the Equinox is asked to call the Highway Patrol Telecommunications Center at 1-800-334-7411 or the Cumberland County Highway Patrol office at 910-486-1334.

NC needs to increase the sentencing guidelines for hit and run, while creating leniency for life saving good samaritan acts done by those whose behavior resulted in serious injury. Too often, we read about people fleeing the scene when a little bit of first aid could save a life.
