Suspicious device found smoldering in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill police closed East Franklin Street at Elliott Road for about three hours late Thursday while they investigated a suspicious device that had been set on fire.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Chapel Hill police closed East Franklin Street at Elliott Road for about three hours late Thursday while they investigated a suspicious device that had been set on fire.

Authorities responded to the intersection at about 9:30 p.m. and began diverting traffic and pedestrians away from the area.

The Durham County Sheriff's Bomb Detection Unit determined that the device was not an explosive. 

The road was reopened at about 1 a.m. Friday, Chapel Hill police said.
