Suspect sought in shooting, car theft at Fayetteville gas station

Darnell Ray Lewis is not in custody, police said Wednesday. He is wanted on charges of attempted murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Police believe a second person conspired with Lewis to commit the crimes.

Officers were called to 5520 Raeford Road on Nov. 23 to investigate a motor vehicle theft and shooting. Investigators learned that, around 7:30 p.m., a man got out of a parked green-colored car and into the backseat of the victim's car, put a gun to the victim's head and demanded money.

The man pulled the trigger several times, but the gun malfunctioned, police said. The victim got out of the car and ran, and the man then fired several shots, striking a Ford Expedition parked nearby.

A driver and two juvenile passengers were in the SUV, but were not hit. The robbery victim was not injured either.

The shooter drove away in the victim's car, followed by the green car, police said. The victim's car was found three days later at a Target store on Skibo Road.

It wasn't clear whether Lewis was the suspected gunman or the driver of the green car.
