Durham, N.C. — A Durham man charged with wounding a baby last week says the shooting was an accident.
Arin Tavon Futrell, 21, is charged with felony negligent child abuse resulting in bodily injury in connection with the Wednesday morning incident.
The shooting occurred on the front porch of 402 Macon St. Neighbors said Futrell was arguing with his girlfriend, Marilyn Peace, before he fired a shot.
The bullet hit Peace's 5-month-old daughter, Jay, in the hand and leg. Police said the wounds weren't life-threatening.
Police initially said the shooting was part of a domestic dispute, but they later backed off that assertion, saying it was an accident.
Futrell has told investigators that the gun was in a pocket of his sweatshirt and accidentally went off.
