Suspect's mom charged in Nash deputy's death

Posted December 14, 2011

— A Kinston woman faces accusations that she helped her teenage son who is suspected of killing two people, including a Nash County sheriff's deputy, police said.

A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Tracy Laverne Lee, 36, of 600 Carey Road, on a charge of accessory after the fact in June 2 shooting death of Thomas Hinton. She was placed in the Lenoir County under a $1 million secured bond.

Police said Lee is the mother of Kion Tyearl Dail, 16, who is accused of killing Hinton. Lamont D. Byrd, 18, is also charged in Hinton's death.

When U.S. marshals tried to arrest Dail and Byrd at a Kinston house on June 9, someone opened fire on them. Warren "Sneak" Lewis, 38, an Nash County investigator assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service, was killed.

Dail, Byrd, Devine Slade, 17, and Maretto Byrd, 26, were charged with murder in Lewis' death.

He had backup to the tune of about 8 other officers. The cowards shot through the door as he was walking out of the house.

"will the son be tried as an adult i wonder?"
why wonder when all u have to do is look up the law? and since i dont see that happening, yes he will be charged as as adult just like any other 16 year old who commits a crime in NC.

I don't understand why the deputy was trying to serve a murder warrant without backup. 5 people were arrested in connection with his murder, so I'm sure the relatives were interfering with the serving of the warrants.

kermit, my guess is she knew and hid him or lied for him after the fact, or perhaps it was her weapon? Either way, accessory after the fact implicates her in the crime.

Exactly what did she do to help them? The article doesn't give any information.
