Suspect's mom charged in Nash deputy's death

Kinston, N.C. — A Kinston woman faces accusations that she helped her teenage son who is suspected of killing two people, including a Nash County sheriff's deputy, police said.
A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Tracy Laverne Lee, 36, of 600 Carey Road, on a charge of accessory after the fact in June 2 shooting death of Thomas Hinton. She was placed in the Lenoir County under a $1 million secured bond.
Police said Lee is the mother of Kion Tyearl Dail, 16, who is accused of killing Hinton. Lamont D. Byrd, 18, is also charged in Hinton's death.
When U.S. marshals tried to arrest Dail and Byrd at a Kinston house on June 9, someone opened fire on them. Warren "Sneak" Lewis, 38, an Nash County investigator assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service, was killed.
Dail, Byrd, Devine Slade, 17, and Maretto Byrd, 26, were charged with murder in Lewis' death.
