ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Police said Wednesday that the suspect in an October shooting death in Roanoke Rapids has surrendered.

James Antwon "Buster" Coleman III, 24, of Weldon, turned himself in to Halifax County deputies Tuesday evening. He was charged with murder and was being held without bond in the Halifax County jail.

An investigation of an Oct. 23 vehicle crash at 4th and Madison streets in Roanoke Rapids turned into a homicide investigation when paramedics discovered that the unconscious driver, Rynell Tyreek Gaines, 27, of Roanoke Rapids, had been shot and was dead.

Police haven't released other details in the case, such as a possible motive for the shooting and what evidence connects Coleman to the crime.
