Suspect in Roanoke Rapids homicide arrested

— Rocky Mount police arrested a man wanted in a weekend homicide in Roanoke Rapids late Tuesday.

Tavaras Ivey, also known as "Tater," was charged with first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm within the Roanoke Rapids city limits. He was being held without bond Tuesday in the Halifax County Jail.

Ivey was charged with the shooting death of Corey Graham, 21. Graham was shot around midnight Saturday outside the Interstate  BP gas station, 1909 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

Paramedics transported Graham to Halifax Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Police said they also want to speak with Micheal Bernard Ponton Jr., Alphonso Ponton and Vance Pernell about the shooting.

    Unbelievable, Mike is in my graduating class we were just taking cap and gown pictures two weeks ago. I really thought Mike was getting his life together but he was still hanging with the wrong crowd. I hope this guy does not get off for the murder, drug dealer or no drug dealer. You can't go around killing people just because you want to.

    @ skywatch_nc it isn't the same michael his dad's name is michael ponton as well.

    im from roanoke rapids and i heard it was bad ....im glad they caught one guy who shot that boy, hope they get the others too

    I worked with a Mike Ponton at Patch Rubber Co. in Weldon. Hope it's not the same one mentioned in the report.
