MEBANE, N.C. — A man who led authorities on a chase in Orange and Alamance counties this week died Wednesday after shooting himself during the chase, authorities said.

Stephen Tracy Scott, 57, of Mebane, was wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and armed robbery in connection with a Monday morning robbery in the 1800 block of Buckhorn Road in Orange County in which a homeowner was shot several times, authorities said.

A Mebane police officer saw a Jeep Cherokee on Monday night that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the robbery and shooting and tried to stop it, but the driver sped off, authorities said.

The chase wound in and out of Mebane, and the Jeep eventually ran off the road at 1228 S. Fifth St. and crashed into some nearby woods. Authorities found Scott inside suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was taken to Duke University Hospital.
