Alleged Carquest shooter faces additional charges for police standoff

Matthew Durwood Calton, 53, was indicted on two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the Nov. 23 standoff outside Creedmoor Crossing Shopping Center on Creedmoor Road in north Raleigh.

According to a preliminary internal police report released in November, Calton ignored commands from officers to put down a shotgun and stepped out toward the officers and fired at them.

Officers returned fire, striking Calton, who was wanted in connection with the shooting death earlier that day of Jay Gould Simmons, 53, outside Carquest on East Millbrook Road.

Calton fled the scene and confronted the two officers about six hours later after police received a 911 call from his phone about "something suspicious" by a trash bin behind the shopping center.

Investigators haven't commented on a possible motive for Simmons' death although it is believed to have been over a late rent payment.
