RALEIGH, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Durham man who was taken into custody by a Wake County sheriff's deputy.

Calvin Parker, whose age was not available, was arrested at about 5 p.m. Thursday on charges of driving while intoxicated and for driving with a revoked license.

According to the Wake County Sheriff's Office, while being processed, another law enforcement officer noticed Parker had something in his mouth.

Parker went into convulsions after there was an effort to force the object out of his mouth. The sheriff's office said he had been ordered several times to remove the object.

The sheriff's office did not say what the object was.

Parker was taken to WakeMed where he died. His body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for the cause of death.

The SBI investigation is standard operating policy in such matters, the sheriff's office said.
