3 Henderson officers on leave after fatal shooting

Officers were serving a warrant at 538 Skenes Avenue shortly after 9 p.m.. as part of a narcotics investigation, District Attorney Mike Waters said. A man who has been identified by relatives as Wesley Taylor, 58, allegedly opened fire on the officers, who then returned fire.

One of the officers was struck by a bullet, but he was not hurt because he was wearing a bulletproof vest, authorities said.

Authorities did not elaborate on the narcotics investigation that they were pursuing.

Relatives said Taylor was sick and on oxygen when the shooting occurred. His relatives said they were sorry a police officer was injured and don't believe police did anything wrong.

There were several people inside the home when the shooting occurred, but it was not clear why they were at the residence.

Both the officer and Taylor were taken to Maria Parham Medical Center for treatment. Police said the suspect died from a single gunshot wound, while the officer was treated and released.

Police have not publicly identified the officers who have been placed on leave, which is is standard procedure during an officer-involved shooting. Waters said the officer who was shot did not fire his weapon during the incident.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident.
