DUDLEY, N.C. — A Dudley man told investigators that a friend was shot Tuesday during a botched drug deal in order to conceal his involvement in the shooting, Wayne County authorities said Wednesday.

John Collins Chase II, of 1097 Genoa Road, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and was being held in the Wayne County jail under a $100,000 bond.

Chase drove Anthony Scott Carter to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment after the shooting and told authorities that a drug dealer had shot Carter in the chest. Investigators determined that Chase actually shot Carter in his Dudley home during an argument.

Carter was listed in serious condition Wednesday at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

The shooting remains under investigation, and more charges are possible, authorities said.
