Suspect charged in overnight Raleigh shooting

— Raleigh police arrested a man Monday afternoon in connection with a shooting that injured a man.

Paul Emanuel Gainey, 23, of 71716 Rawls Drive, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in the case.

Officers responding to the 3100 block of Kingstree Court shortly before 2 a.m. found Alshawn Martel Thomas, 28, with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition Monday morning.

Gainey was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He was being held at the Wake County Detention Center Monday night under a $350,000 bond.

Authorities haven't released a motive for the shooting but have said that a preliminary investigation indicated it was not random.

    Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon should be a minimum 25 years of hard labor, no time off for good behavior, no questions asked.

    I was wondering why he was not charged with felon with a gun - I just had to read a little farther to find it... Another one of our outstanding Americans we should all be proud of.

    Where are the guns coming from??!! Felons can't buy from dealers.

    If the SBI and FBI could get a handle on that then maybe LEOs would have a chance curbing gun violence.

    More shootings in Raleigh again. Almost becoming a expected daily headline lately. Hope they catch the shooter and get him off the streets at least for a little bit.
