Suspect accused of assaulting man with axe handle

Burlie Locklear

— A Hoke County man faces a felony assault with a deadly weapon charge after authorities say he confessed to hitting another man with an axe handle.

Burlie D. Locklear II, 38, of 2725 Springhill Road, Red Springs, was arrested Monday in connection with last month's attack on William Cummings.

Hoke County sheriff's deputies began investigating Oct. 15 after they were called to a home on North McPhatter Road after Cummings' family found him in a wooded area.

Cummings was listed in stable but serious condition at a local hospital Tuesday, authorities said.

Burlie, meanwhile, was in the Hoke County jail Tuesday under an $85,000 secured bond.
