Support local artists: Free concerts across Durham, Raleigh this spring

As coronavirus cases remain low across North Carolina, many artists are taking the stage again and hosting concerts. Now's the time to support your local artists. There are dozens of free concerts and music across Durham and Raleigh to take part in this spring.

As coronavirus cases remain low across North Carolina, many artists are taking the stage again and hosting concerts. Now's the time to support your local artists. There are dozens of free concerts and live music opportunities across Durham and Raleigh to take part in this spring.

North Carolina State University is hosting its "Live at Lake Raleigh" series that began on April 7. The outdoor concerts will feature food trucks and live music on the shore of Lake Raleigh, at the corner of Main Campus Drive and Campus Shore Drive.
  • The Bluegrass band The Barefoot Movement will perform on April 21 at 6 p.m.
  • Latin band Tumbao will perform at 6 p.m. on May 5
  • Durham-based hip-hop artist Shirlette Ammons will perform on May 19
The Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh will be hosting free jazz music on the first Friday of every month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Irregardless Cafe on Morgan Street in Raleigh will host local performances nearly every night, according to their events calendar. Each Sunday — both morning and night — the Cafe will have local performers for people to enjoy while grabbing a meal. Irregardless Cafe is closed on Mondays.
Tin Roof on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh is launching its concert series Nashville Hits the Roof on April 16. Until May, Tin Roof will host rising country artists from across the United States.
  • American Idol alum Grace Leer will perform at Tin Roof on April 21 at 8 p.m.
  • Alex Hall will play on May 15 at 8 p.m.
  • The Outlaw Apostles will play on May 26 at 8 p.m.
The Blue Note Grill in Durham is holding dozens of free concerts this spring. Every week on Tuesday, the grill hosts an open mic Blues Jam. "Sign up to play or sit back & listen to some blues, chow down on some yummy BBQ, and make new friends – you never know who's gonna show up to play," event organizers said.
Every Thursday night from April 21 to May 26, Park Village West will host free music from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Morrisville. There will be local food trucks and craft breweries at the live concerts. Local favorites like Chick-N-Que, Las Gringas and Empanadas RD will be on site to provide people with food.
While most concerts at the Pour House in Raleigh require a ticket, there are several free options.

Andrew Kasab, a harp guitarist, will be performing on April 17 for free.

The Vandoliers, John Howie Jr., The Rosewood Bluff and Sam Morrow will perform on April 23 in the afternoon

Albert Blomquist and Ryan Johnson will perform for free on April 24 in the afternoon.

Every Saturday night a the Boxcar Bar and Arcade in Raleigh, DJ Atlas will perform on an outdoor stage from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The Raleigh Flute Choir will host a free outdoor concert at Cary's Ritter Park on April 24 at 4 p.m. The concert aims to depict the sounds of the mountains and the legends of Greek mythology.
Duke University music students will be holding several free concerts this spring.
  • The Duke University Chamber Music Program will hold a free concert on April 19 and April 20 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Baldwin Auditorium on Duke's campus.
  • The Duke University String School will perform on April 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Bowstring Pizza and Brewyard on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh regularly has live music. For a full line-up, go to the business' website.
Nickelpoint Brewing Company on Pershing Road in Raleigh will have a handful of free concerts over the next couple months. Derek Chase, a one-man-band, will perform on April 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
