SunTrust banks robbed in Raleigh, Durham

Posted March 11, 2011

— Police in Raleigh were searching Friday for a man who robbed a bank, while Durham police apprehended a suspected bank robber.

A masked man entered the SunTrust branch at 4207 Pleasant Valley Road in Raleigh at about 10:15 a.m. and robbed several tellers before fleeing the scene, police said. The robber didn't display a weapon or imply that he had a weapon, police said.

The robber was described as a black man with a light or medium complexion, about 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 160 pounds. He was wearing a dark warm-up jacket, dark trousers, a knit hat and sunglasses.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-HELP.

In Durham, a man walked into the SunTrust branch at 2714 Erwin Road at about 9:10 a.m. and handed a teller a note indicating that he had a gun, police said. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A short time later, K-9 Officer Moses Irving spotted a man matching the description of the robber on South LaSalle Street near the bridge over the Durham Freeway and arrested him, police said.

Darryl Wayne Barbee, 50, of South Street was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and communicating threats.

To Hattieb2001: "Do you know what kind of trouble that would cause?"

Yes I do know what it would cause. It would cause a MAJOR decrease in Armed Robberies, Rapes, Victims being murdered etc.

If you do not want to arm yourself, that's fine. Don't! Be a victim.

Remember, when Seconds count, the cops are only minutes away.

Trabman_san.....you said give everybody a gun.....Do you know what kind of trouble that would cause? You would have both bank tellers and citizens trying to play detectives and policemen. And ending up shooting the wrong person (or themselves and each other). It would be the Mid-East in the heart of the Triangle.

I must say, I do like the idea that the Federal Credit Union came up with: video and machine interaction.
Safer for tellers and customers both.
The bank robbers will look lost, (trying to rob a machine, and the tellers in a back room safe).

Arm the Tellers and Bank Employees. To the Banks, Remove those "NO Firearms" stickers off your doors and allow your Customers who choose to carry(open or concealed) into your branches. This will STOP this nonsense.

More banks need to start going to the concept Coastal Federal Credit Union uses where you don't have actual face-to-face contact with the teller, but video and machine interaction. I am sure the tellers feel much safer working in that environment.

All banks need an armed Officer at the entrance. This would discourage some of this and have more eyes on the general public while the tellers are dealing with other customers, and get "snuck up on."

So, no one saw this individual either approaching the bank or walking in and thought anything. No one uses first impressions anymore.. And it's not profiling, as I've told many folks before, if something or someone seems odd/strange, or whatever, it's better to call the police over nothing than after something bad happens.

Ok Vietnam Vet....even if the alarm button is pressed, it does not stop the robbery in process. Also, if police did respond while the robber is still there, you could have innocent people caught in the line of fire. You obviously do not know or understand the proper procedure during robberies, so don't judge the tellers or any bank personel unless you have been subjected to a crime like this.

Why cant banks install quality HD security cameras? I swear my dads old home movie camera in 1976 is far superior to what the banks use! Every image they show is grainy and from a bad angle.
