Sunshine warms Triangle after freezing start to week
A freeze warning Monday morning made a cold start to the workweek in the Triangle and surrounding counties.
Posted — UpdatedTemperatures in most areas were at or around 32 degrees as of 6 a.m., but by noon bright subshines had pushed them to the 60-degree mar.
Highs will hit an above-normal high of 70 by Wednesday before another cold front moves in Thursday.
Thursday, according to WRAL Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, brings a chance of a shower.
"Not a lot of rain," she said. "We're looking at a trace to maybe a quarter of an inch as an average across our area."
Weekend highs are forecast in the upper 50s and overnight lows in the 30s.
Monday's winter air comes as some western parts of the state saw as much as 8 inches of snow over the weekend.
Sugar Mountain in Avery County opened to skiers, although Mother Nature got a helping hand from snow-making machines.
"It’s always a treat. We don’t really expect to ride until Thanksgiving," one snowboarder said. "But when I knew it was coming in, I admit last night I was definitely excited."
