RALEIGH, N.C. — WRAL's Debra Morgan was crowned the celeb cupcake wars champion Wednesday night at Sugarland bakery in Raleigh's Cameron Village.
Sugarland, a cupcake and dessert shop with locations in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, hosted the event to celebrate its fifth birthday.

Based on the Food Network TV show "Cupcake Wars," Sugarland pastry chefs were paired with local celebrities. They raced against the clock to make a delicious cupcake using at least three of the five North Carolina ingredients supplied to them. Each team got different ingredients.

Morgan and pastry chef Melissa Majchrzak created "Marshmallow Fluff," a chocolate cupcake made with Larry's Beans coffee and Videri Pink Peppercorn chocolate. It was filled Southern Season marshmallows and topped with a buttercream made from Fullsteam's Working Man's Lunch brew and Angus Barn Cheddar Cheese.

For using all the ingredients, Morgan got an extra 10 points.

Teams were judged on appearance and taste.

Morgan won $1,000, which will be split between Alzheimer's North Carolina and the Caring Community Foundation. The other teams will get $500 for their respective charities.

WQRD 94.7 FM's morning host Mike Weless was voted the fan favorite. His creation, Sweet Potato Surprise (a sweet potato cake filled with marshmallow cream with Mt. Olive relish and topped with a cinnamon cream cheese buttercream and a scuppernog glaze and candied bacon) will be featured on Sugarland's menu next month.

The other competitors UNC football’s Coach Fedora, and The Biggest Loser’s Ed & Heba also created some tasty cupcakes.

Fedora's Chapel Hill Crumb Cake was vanilla cake with Vintage Bee creamed honey and cinnamon streusel. It also contained goat cheese.

Heba and Ed's cupcake was dubbed the Dirty South was a chocolate cupcake containing Krispy Kreme doughnuts filled with a Texas Pete ganache and topped with a Riesling buttercream and Moravian cookie crumbles.

The competition was just the start of Sugarland's birthday celebrations – all month the cupcake shop will have specials and other events.  In March, Sugarland is hosting another interactive competition in which local charities will have the chance to win $500. Participating organizations will be give a hashtag for their supporters to use on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook showing themselves at Sugarland with some delicious treats. At the end of the month, the charity with the most posts using their hashtag and Sugarland's will win the prize.
