WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Room 1613 at Heritage High School in Wake Forest looks more like a recording studio than a classroom.

That’s because it’s home to Heritage Records, a nonprofit recording label run by the students.

It all started when student Malik Walker took Leonard Bullock’s Technology Education class in Room 1613.

“I told him I rap and produce, and he had me spit a verse for him,” said Walker, a junior.

Walker met up last year with classmate Trevor Shores, who also recorded music.

“I had an idea for a song called ‘Ship of Fools’ about a topic that I learned in psychology,” Shores said.

Added Walker: “After that, we met up with Mr. Bullock and started trying to form a record label.”

Heritage Records was born. The first CD, entitled “Room 1613,” went on sale in May.

The project has been about more than just making music, Bullock said.

“We wanted them to understand the business that drives their creativity,” he said.

The CD costs $5, and money from the sales is being collected to help build a real recording studio for all students at the school. Another CD is coming out at the end of the month.

“There are a lot of students here who have creative potential, and they just need a space to develop,” Walker said.

For the students working on the new Heritage Records label, it's a learning experience like no other.

“I feel like the finished product is the students,” Bullock said. “We're turning these boys into men.”
