Students in Triangle in solidarity with Queen City

Students at several universities across the Triangle gathered Friday to show solidarity with the Queen City.

The participants said shootings of civilians by police have them shaken, and the recent incident in Charlotte, where officers shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, moved them to action.

"I have seen so many bodies that look like mine fall to the hands of police," said North Carolina State University sophomore Achaia Dent.

There was a march on the NC State campus Friday afternoon. Inside the student union, hundreds of people laid on the floor in a die-in demonstration. The mood was solemn and the room was silent.

Emotions were also high at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Students rallied in "The Pit," a popular campus gathering spot.

At Elon University, students marched across campus as well.

"This march is in recognition of the fact that black people, black men, black women and black children deserve the same value placed on their lives as any other person," said Alexis Williams, president of the Elon Black Student Union.

At each university, some students said they'd join protesters in Charlotte over the weekend.
