FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An 11-year-old student has been suspended from Mary McArthur Elementary School after allegedly bringing a weapon to the school Tuesday, authorities said.

School resource officers were called to the school on Village Drive after fellow students reported seeing the weapon in a book bag. The weapon is described as an air pistol that shoots rounds of plastic pellets and has a magazine clip that allows the shooter to change out empty cartridges, authorities said.

The weapon is similar in appearance to the 9-millimeter handguns used by law enforcement officers, authorities said.

The student has been remanded to the custody of his parents, and detectives are investigating to determine if criminal charges are warranted in the case, authorities said.
