Student stabs classmate with pencil

Posted November 20, 2008

— Juvenile charges were pending Thursday after a 9-year-old boy at Cliffdale Road Elementary School stabbed a girl in his class in the back with a pencil, authorities said.

The boy argued with the 10-year-old girl after he discovered his pencil box was missing from his desk, authorities said. He stabbed her, puncturing the upper portion of her back, they reported.

The girl didn't require emergency medial assistance and returned to class later in the day, authorities said.

The pencil box was found in the girl's possession.

The boy could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, pending the completion of an investigation, authorities said. His parents picked him up from school, and school administrators were discussing what disciplinary action to take.

"Some are saying why call the law for such a trivial matter. A nine year old with a good sence of right and wrong will not stab another child over a pencil box."

But this exact thing has happened in schools throughout the country for 100 years or more and legal intervention was never warranted. Yet with our new police state fear driven mentality we will promote this to a charge of "assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury" - even though she wasn't seriously injured.

It's an unjustified over-reaction and I for one do not like the fear mongering the scared ninnies are using to create a police state for us to march in.

I think being stabbed by a pencil is pretty severe. Sometimes kids steal but I don't think our society condones physical punishment for stealing, do we? I am amazed by some of these comments implying that the girl had it coming. Any child that stabs someone with anyone needs serious intervention. Yes, the girl needs punishment as well, but not a pencil in her back!

This is a sad story.. The girl should be punished for taking something that is not hers .. I am sure now she might think twice before stealing again. However, the boys reaction was so far out of line. Not sure if the police should have been called but he certainly is in need of counseling as he is old enough to know that stabbing some one does not equate to an eye for an eye.. An eye for an eye would have been that he take something of value from her so she would know how it feels.
The parents are to blame for not instilling in the how to behave appripriately. The school should not have to deal with that. Too bad the juvenile delinquents are getting younger and younger these days.

And will the little girl be charged with theft?

  • lovecarolinagutters Nov 21, 2008

The little girls Mama should have bought her a pencil box...and then taught her that thou shall not steal.

I remember going to school with some farm girls that would bully boys. Sounds to me the girl got what she was asking for. She prbably should be suspended for stealing. She will probably think twice about stealing again and her parents should thank the boy for doing their job. Plenty of time for chivalry later on.

This is normal child justice; an eye for an eye is exactly how they think.

Praying for both of these children, scarred by over-reaction to normal childhood behavior. The educators should know better.

    God bless.
