BLADENBORO, N.C. — A student was shot outside West Bladen High School Tuesday afternoon, a Bladen County Schools spokeswoman said.

Spokeswoman Valerie Newton said the student was shot around 2:55 p.m. as the dismissal bell rang. Law enforcement quickly cleared the scene and took another student into custody.

The victim's injuries weren't serious, and he was alert and well Wednesday, Newton said.

The names of the students involved in the shooting weren't released. There was no word on charges.

Newton said no incidents have been reported at the school Wednesday, and extra security precautions, including metal detectors and bag checks, have been put in place.
