Student killed in shooting remembered as caring, hard-working

Amhad Campbell, of Kittrell, was a high school track star at Southern Vance High School, but his parents said he went off to college to focus on his grades instead.

Now, his family is grieving his loss. They say they want the world to know their son as he lived - a generous, caring man, who lived a life strongly rooted in faith.

"(He was) one of the sweetest, kindest guys you could meet," said Anthony Campbell, Amhad's father.

Anthony Campbell and his wife, Alicia, were notified of their son's death when their phone rang at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. A voice on the other end said Ahmad had been shot while at a party.

"He was the perfect angel and he's my true angel now," Alicia Campbell said.

Alicia Campbell said her son overcame a learning disability to become a straight A student in high school. He went on to college and majored in agriculture and environmental systems.

According to police, Ahmad Campbell and a group of friends were at an off-campus party when an uninvited guest was asked to leave. Tension escalated and shots were fired. Alisia Dieudonne, 19, of Homewood, Illinois, was also killed.

"I'm not even angry or hating him. I just figure maybe he was confused or just really didn't know the value of life," said Anthony Campbell of the shooter.

Campbell's parents say they vow to be strong through their grief, and to be thankful for Ahmad's life.

"He's safe, he's safe now," Alicia Campbell said. "He don’t have to worry about this cruel world anymore. And with that I'm happy. I'm very happy."

Greensboro police Capt. Nathaniel Davis said witnesses have cooperated with police who have yet to determine a suspect, the weapon used or the number of guests at the party.
