NCCU student killed in Durham crash; 2 others injured

A North Carolina Central University student was killed and two other people were seriously injured Tuesday evening in a two-car crash in Durham, authorities said.

Chekeira Renae Reid, of Greensboro, was killed in the crash on Highway 55 near Crete Road at about 6:40 p.m, according to a statement from NCCU. Authorities said Tariq Jamal Jacobs, 19, was driving his 2000 Honda Accord southbound when the car crossed the center line and collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Reid, a passenger in Jacobs' car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jacobs, a sophomore from Norfolk and a member of the football team, was injured, as was Joshua Clark, 27, the driver of the Cobalt.

Authorities said Jacobs and Clark did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Speed appears to he have been a factor in the wreck, authorities said, but no charges have been filed.

Reid, a senior, was a recreation administration major with a concentration in sports management and a minor in business. She served as a team manager for both the football and women's basketball teams.

Grief counselors were available in the student union Tuesday night.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the football field.
