Volunteers, donations still needed in wake of Hurricane Matthew

Groups helping the thousands of North Carolinians who saw homes and businesses flooded by Hurricane Matthew say the need for volunteers has not decreased as time has passed. The shortage of hands is greatest in counties hardest-hit by the storm.

Available opportunities are listed by county and by agency on the North Carolina Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster website.

“North Carolinians have always gone above and beyond to help each other in times of crises,” said Mike Sprayberry, director of North Carolina Emergency Management. “Already numerous people have come forward to help those in need, but we need more. Whether it is volunteering your time or making a donation, you can make a difference in someone’s life and help our state recover.”

Those who can't spare the time or skills to help in person can give to the recovery effort through the NC Disaster Relief Fund.

Monetary donations are preferred over goods because they are more easily distributed to those in need. Local organizations spend the money in the local affected community, accelerating its economic recovery.

Cash donations to recognized relief organizations are tax-deductible.
