Tractor-trailer fire leads to miles-long backups on I-85 near Butner

I-85 tractor-trailer fire closes southbound, northbound lanes near Butner

Part of Interstate 85 was closed after a tractor-trailer caught fire on Wednesday morning between Butner and Durham.

The truck was pulled over on the shoulder of the road near mile marker 186, where fire crews were seen climbing atop the tractor-trailer to extinguish the fire.

Most of the truck's cabin was burned almost completely away, and the interstate sign beside the road was also charred.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane was closed to traffic at one point. As of noon, traffic was backed up approximately four miles in the southbound lanes and three miles in the northbound lanes.

No one was injured. Officials said about 100 gallons of fuel spilled, but none of the spillage made it into nearby Falls Lake.

The road fully reopened by 2:15 p.m.
