A tractor-trailer carrying heavy machinery damaged a bridge over Interstate 95 in Smithfield on Monday.

The tractor-trailer scraped the bottom side of the Brogden Road bridge while traveling in the southbound lanes of I-95 around noon. The vehicle was carrying a hydraulic excavator.

Transportation officials said the three steel beams holding up the bridge were all damaged. One had extensive damage.

The Brogden Road bridge has been shut down. Officials did not give an estimate on how long repairs would take, but said the bridge will be closed for some time.

All lanes on I-95 stayed open, and no injuries were reported.
