Fayetteville police say they are investigating after a woman claimed a man impersonating an officer tried to sexually assault her Saturday.

According to the initial report, Darian Burden, 41, identified himself as a police officer and attempted to sexually assault the woman.

At the time of the alleged incident, Burden was driving a white Chevrolet Trailblazer with N.C. license plate # VXV-9305.

Police were still looking for Burden Sunday evening.  He is described as black man, 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 175 pounds.

"We are in the process of verifying if Burden is a police officer or not," Fayetteville police said in a statement. "Apparently, at some point, he showed the victim some type of police credentials."

The victim's name was not released. No additional information about the case was available.

Authorities advise motorists that if they ever question an officer's identity to wait to pull off the road into a well-lit and safe location, and ask to see the officer’s credentials. You can also call 911 to verify the officer's identification.
