Suspect in Moore County robbery, shooting out of hospital

A suspect in a robbery and shooting at a Moore County convenience store last week has been released from the hospital and was being held Tuesday at Central Prison in Raleigh, authorities said.

Randy Joel Williams, 17, of Southern Pines, was treated at UNC Hospitals after he was shot in the face during a June 28 shootout outside the Exxon Short Stop Food Mart, on U.S. Highway 1 in Lakeview.

According to investigators, Angus Kelly, 78, drove up to the store to see three men robbing his wife, 75-year-old store clerk Grace Kelly, at gunpoint. He fired his shotgun through the window, striking Williams.

The getaway driver fled the area, and two other men inside the store used Grace Kelly as a shield, prompting an exchange of gunfire in which Angus and Grace Kelly were shot, investigators said.

Angus Kelly was listed in critical condition Tuesday at UNC Hospitals. His wife was treated at Moore Regional Hospital and released.

Leroy Richard Medley, 20, of Southern Pines, Demarcus James Dennison, 18, of Polkton, and Paris Yusef Mack, 17, of Southern Pines, also were charged in the case. All three were being held in the Moore County Detention Center.
