Sunset Liberty March will happen every day, rain or shine

Fort Bragg is getting closer to becoming Fort Liberty by establishing a daily march to commemorate soldiers.

Final preparations are being made for the Sunset Liberty March, which begins on Thursday night, the day before the re-designation.

The Sunset Liberty March will start at the circle that reads "Fort Liberty, Liberty for All" and go up the hill for just over a half-mile to a plaza and monument. It's a march that will happen every day, rain or shine, at sunset. The march is .6 miles and begins at Honeycutt and Liberty Trail (Old Bragg Blvd.) and ends near where Randolph and Butner intersect.

The march is designed after the march in Holland where more than 40 members of the 82nd Airborne Division lost their lives in battle at a bridge that crosses the Waal River during World War II.

Lt. General Chris Donahue, Fort Bragg's Commanding General, says every day at sunset, a designated veteran who signs up will walk the trail in honor of someone who has given his or her life for the country.

"Everyday we come out and represent," said Donahue. "The veteran of the day will come out and we will represent a gold star. A person who gave his life, a family member. Family members can can come and do it. Anyone can come here and do that ... and every day we will remember."

In addition to honoring a hero, you will get a history lesson about the evolution of Fort Bragg. Signs along the trail will highlight significant events that have taken place on post dating back to 1774.

If you want to sign up to be the designated "Liberty Marcher," you can check out more about that here. You must be a veteran, current service member (active or reserve), or Gold Star Family member. Approximately the first 90 days have already been reserved.

The re-designation happens on Friday, June 2. A ceremonial event will include the casing of the Fort Bragg garrison colors, and uncasing of the Fort Liberty colors, signifying the re-designation to Fort Liberty. Donahue will be the event's guest speaker. The event will be streamed on the Fort Bragg Paraglide Facebook page.
