Sheriff: Fayetteville man decapitated puppy during domestic dispute

A Cumberland County man is facing several charges after authorities said he decapitated a dog during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

Sheriff Ennis Wright said a woman went to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Nov. 17 saying she was experiencing pains in her neck after being choked by her boyfriend, 18-year-old Antonio Hollywood Campbell, at a home in the 1500 block of Gillespie Street in Fayetteville.

The woman told investigators that she was at Campbell’s home three weeks earlier and he became upset and threatened to kill their dog if she left him.

Campbell tied a leash around the puppy’s neck and began to spin the dog in the air before tying the leash to the back of a vehicle and driving several feet, dragging the dog, Wright said.

Authorities said Campbell then placed the puppy between two cinder blocks so it was unable to move before decapitating the dog with a hatchet.

Detectives searched Campbell’s home Monday and found the dogs remains, along with the cinder blocks and hatchet, as well as a sawed off shot gun.

Campbell was charged with domestic violence felony strangulation, animal cruelty and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Campbell was being held under $137,000 bond Tuesday night.
