Raleigh man indicted in wrong-way DWI wreck

A Raleigh man who police say killed two people in a head-on collision on Wade Avenue last month was indicted Monday on two counts of felony death by vehicle and one count of driving while impaired.

Investigators say Ray Norman Rouse IV, 34, was driving west in an eastbound lane on the afternoon of March 17 when he struck a car driven by Ormond Jackson Bailey.

Bailey, 83, and his wife, Gaynell Batton Bailey, 79, died from their injuries at WakeMed.

According to a search warrant for his cellphone, Rouse smelled of alcohol on his person and his clothing. A witness reported that he was coming from a brunch and had been drinking alcohol prior to the wreck, the warrant stated.

Police have previously said that he could face more charges upon his release from WakeMed.

He was listed Monday in fair condition.

According to court records, Rouse pleaded guilty to DWI in Durham County after a September 2001 arrest. Similar charges were dismissed against him in April 2005 in Wake County and February 2006 in Wake County.

Friends of the Baileys said the couple was headed home after church and lunch to watch basketball on television when the collision occurred.
