Rabid fox found in west Raleigh
Wake County officials are cautioning residents after a rabid fox was found in west Raleigh last week.
Health officials said Tuesday the fox was found Friday near the intersection of South Lakeside Drive and Norman Place. It was taken to a state lab, where it tested positive for the disease. Officials did not say whether the fox was dead or alive when it was found.
"We don't want to alarm residents in Raleigh, but they should be aware of these cases and of the potential for exposure to themselves, family members and their pets," Sue Lynn Ledford, Community Health director for Wake County, said in a statement. “Rabies vaccination is critical to help to prevent the spread of disease, and rabies vaccination is required by law. This is a great opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of rabies vaccinations for their pets.”
Residents are encouraged not to approach animals they do not know or that are acting strangely and ensure their pets have a current rabies vaccination.
