Probe Into Floyd Recovery Spending Completed

State investigators have finished a 10-month investigation into how Princeville spent some federal relief money after Hurricane Floyd.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency handed out $26 million to Princeville's more than 2,000 residents and another $1.5 million to the town to rebuild after Floyd wiped out much of the town in 1999. FEMA funneled another $7 million to the area in the form of grants.

The State Bureau of Investigation examined how much of that money was spent in response to a request by Edgecombe County District Attorney Howard Boney.

The SBI's findings have been turned over to Boney, who will decide whether to file charges.
