Princeton softball wasn't used to finding itself winless at this stage of the year, and the battle-tested Bulldogs decided enough was enough.

It wasn't easy, but Princeton's first win of the year came in Tuesday's Neuse 6 Conference opener at Eastern Wayne.

Eastern Wayne sophomore pitcher Mallory Reed struck out 17 batters, allowing one infield hit. However, the Bulldogs (1-6, 1-0) made good use of three errors by the Warriors (4-3, 0-1).

Princeton pushed one run across in the sixth inning as freshman Khloe Jones scored the game's only tally.

Reed's big night was almost matched by Princeton sophomore Mary Rachel Uzzell, who struck out 14 batters and only walked two (both were Reed, who was 1-of-1 on the day with a single off the left field wall) while giving up four hits.

Princeton had thus far suffered losses to solid programs: Nash Central, East Duplin, Rosewood, South Johnston, C.B. Aycock, and No. 22 Wayne Christian.

Eastern Wayne has now been shut out in all three of its losses this year by scores of 3-0, 2-0, and 1-0.
