Durham man dead in shooting outside Efland-Cheeks Community Center

A Durham man died Monday after being shot in the parking lot of the Efland-Cheeks Community Center.

Sheriff Charles Blackwood said his deputies found Tevin Deshawn Kendrick, 22, lying on the ground near a white passenger car with the trunk open. Kendrick had been shot multiple times, Blackwood said, and he estimated that the shooting could have happened more than four hours before the body was found.

“This type of an incident is something that we can’t just accept as normal,” said Blackwood.

Authorities did not have any suspects.

Blackwood said the nearby Efland-Cheeks Elementary School was not involved in the crime scene, but the area around the building was blocked off Monday afternoon because authorities didn't want people cutting through the parking lot while they investigated the scene.

School was not in session Monday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, but officers will be at the school Tuesday as a precaution, authorities said.

Blackwood said that, since so many people were home because of the holiday, he believes neighbors may have seen or heard something in relation to the incident.

“This is a quiet time of day. Folks are at home, taking time off from work with their families, and we hope that someone heard the gunshots as they were fired,” he said.

Herbert McAdoo has lived in Efland for more than 30 years. He said it’s been a relatively quiet neighborhood until Monday afternoon.

“We were sitting in here and we heard, first we heard three shots. And in a second or two, we heard four more shots,” he said.

The community center was closed Monday for the holiday, and McAdoo said it has been an asset, with constant baseball, soccer and basketball games.

“The neighborhood here, everybody knows everybody,” McAdoo said. “This is the first time something like this has ever happened.”
