N.C. Highway 12, the main thoroughfare along the Outer Banks, reopened Thursday to four-wheel drive traffic, authorities said.

Four-wheel drive access was restricted Wednesday because of overwash. The highway has remained closed to regular traffic since it was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

The ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe is continuing as scheduled. Extra ferries have been added from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke.
